I found a black key fob for an Audi with what looked like a house key attached on the trail just before the start of Lekisch/past the tunnel from the stadium. Left the key on top of the lockbock at the entrance to the Chalet.

A few inches fresh. Enough to ski from pass to Summit Lake on fishscale skis on side of the road. 35 degrees it may melt out. Road still open

Biked round trip to Girdwood today. Note that a mountain stream deposited a very large amount of rocks/gravel/mud on the trail during one of the recent large rainstorms. Location is on the downhill heading towards GW, ~1/2mi. south of crest of the big hill Mtn bikes can easily ride thru, but skinny tire bikers will probably want to walk thru to avoid a flat. It will take machinery to remove - far too much for shoveling.

The Parks Dept was pumping water from beneath C St this morning — had about another foot of water to go. The rest of the trail was clear — Gambell, Arctic, and east of Minnesota — though in some cases barricades/trail-closures signs were still up.

Pete... Are you asking about the bridge work in Russian Jack Park or are they also working on the bridge near the Native Medical Campus? I was diverted around the Russian Jack Trail bridge construction about two weeks ago but don't know the schedule for completion. I'm guessing that more trail work will follow the bridge work.

Today's Kincaid bear sighting: two bears, I think mom and cub but also that was one bigass black bear if it was a sow, main soccer field. Not aggressive or anything, but definitely also walking through the area amidst the dozens of people at or near the chalet at 1 p.m. on a warm sunny day, so keep an eye out.

Mama bear with triplet cubs hanging out on the Raspberry multiuse path, in the valley between the bridge and the Nike missile cradle, for at least an hour. the second time I saw her she looked agitated from some bikers going by, and I wasn’t going to chance it on roller skis, I went out to the road. Also had to stop twice for some guy walking at least ten dogs, and only two of them leashed. Guess he couldn’t read the many signs about leashes being required.

There is a small stream running over the trail with some loose gravel on the G'wood side of the high point, and there is also a lot of vegetation extending over the trail, narrowing it substantially, also on the G'wood side. Beautiful ride in any case.

For anyone curious about the mine/Hatcher Pass area generally for weekend hiking (or skiing?!): Road up is plowed and bone dry, has been for a few weeks now. However, gate is still closed at lower lot; sounds like that won't open till next Tuesday. If you park and walk up, you'll find plowed pavement through the two parking lot loops, then a foot of snow, at least, around the mine buildings. I skied it with my children, to delighted effect. Slope on the non-mine side of the valley is still solid snow. You could walk to the lake or the cabin but it would be rough going. Gate at Archangel Road has been open for the last week-plus. Road was in great shape when I ran on it two weeks ago so is presumptively still good. Road up to Summit Lake is nowhere near close to being open. You'd have to walk a bit from the lodge area before putting on alpine skis, but not very far at all.

Packrafted Portage Creek starting below the boulder garden downstream of the bridge to the Portage Rd takeout. Too much construction activity at the Seward Hwy takeout today. The level isn’t bad in little boats. It’s doable in a bigger raft but you’ll drag in a few spots until the level comes up.

Multi-use path along Raspberry is swept and in great condition for the rollerski sickos. Mama moose with hours-old calves on biathlon penalty loop, so heads up there. Sand Lake path not swept but in great shape; ample road dirt at all intersections though.

That will be the last grooming session of the season as State Parks is having DOT plow the road and parking lot at the mine on Wednesday. We will be back grooming in about 5 months. Think Snow! Eleven out of ten crust at the mine this morning. Skiing by 8:00. Crust held till 10:30. Skiers left on the way up. Same route down. Sunny aspects turned to velvet around 9:30 before poles punching through by 10:00.

Watched a pair of skate skiers heading back to parking lot at 1030 from my perch on Flattop. More snow free areas showing up but they seemed to be able to ski continuously until half way up the final hill. Sunny side trail snow free until end of final switchback where it climbs through snow to get to the relatively flat traverse to the saddle. Not much snow above the saddle.

South Fork Eagle River

Ok trail, 0-10" snow on it, muddy footprints defining it. 8am mostly hard packed with some soft spots. After the Rendezvous Ridge post down to bridge it is very soft and hip deep in spots if ya lose solid snow. Few if any tracks past bridge. Trail started getting punchy about 11 or so. Earlier the better to be on trail. (7 -8) New Muktuk Marston trail up to Hunter Pass has few if any tracks, users going up the old way to pass, though Muktuk trail looks clear about half way up.
Trail to bridge should be clear in week with this weather barring any new snowstorms.

Stopped and took a peek at the ski and multi use trails. They are drying up but still pretty muddy. The signs must be working because no bike track ruts or muddy footprints were observed but someone rode their horse through and dug some divots.To their credit, the red sign does not state anything about horse back riding.
