Bird to Gird Trail Saturday 2PM by devo

Rode the Bird to Gird Trail. Conditions generally good, with one exception. A very active stream has jumped its banks and runs along the trail for a few hundred feet, depositing mud and sand. No problem for those with wide tires, but not good for my skinny tire road bike. It is on the big hill between Bird Point and Girdwood.
The trail was the busiest that I have ever seen. If you are riding with kids, try to get them to ride on the right, single file. A few close calls out there.

Hillside Singletrack Trails Thursday May 29 by Julian Mason

Emily-the firebreak is not a trail. It is a firebreak. Trees have been cut and some brush has been cleared but it is not a trail. It would be very tough to bike, or walk, or even to ski without a lot of snow cover. The area has been closed because hot shot crews have been working cutting the firebreak. The firebreak is near the STA trails and is nearly complete. Check back in a day or two.

Tour of Anchorage Trail Thursday May 29 by Larry Rundquist

Moose caution along the Tour Trail or Old Rondy Trail. Cow with 2 new calfs on the south side of the trail between the two trails that connect to the Airstrip Trail. Another moose seen at the sharp bend in the trail just north of the North Fork bridge. It did not bother me but did charge another biker and thus could have a calf.

Campbell Creek Trail Wednesday May 28 by pete

Just wondering how this trail is with regards to homeless camps. It was a pleasure to ride Chester Creek without all the mess.

Glenn Highway Pathway Tuesday May 27 by John

Road paving on the portion of the Glenn Hwy to and over the old bridge that is now a local road makes it less attractive ride, and it will be closed from 2 June until complete. Taking People Mover bus 92 to get around it. Three bikes fit on this one.

Alaska Pacific University Tuesday May 20 by Sarah Schoen

I was just walking on the APU trails and ran into a woman and her two dogs who had been attacked by a cow moose defending her calf. It was near the trail that goes next to the Faculty Ridge Road. She is going to be okay, but I just want to make sure other people are aware of the aggressive moose in the area.

Kincaid Park Thursday Apr 24 by wayne

For those who don't want to drive to the mountains: Kincaid multi-use trail, Raspberry pathway, Sand Lake Road pathway, and gravel pit neighborhoods are snow-free and roller-skiable. Some sand on the Kincaid pathway between the hill and chalet; Sand Lake pathway at Kincaid Road has the typical sand trap on the south side; Raspberry pathway has sand near curb ramps; the rest of the pathway is pretty clean. Not sure if the gravel pit neighborhood has been swept or not, but sand/gravel wasn't a problem on road or pathways.

Upper Huffman Sunday Apr 20 by Heidi

Classic skied from Upper Huffman up a smaller unnamed trail to the Gasline and Powerline to Glen Alps, then back down Gasline to Silver Fern to TH.

Snow was spring soft and slushy. First mile uphill from Upper Huffman TH was thin and dirty, but still continuous snow cover for the moment. Winter snowpack starts about halfway between Upper Huffman and Glen Alps. Everything was skiable except Silver Fern trail, which was about half mud patches.

Alaska Pacific University Thursday Apr 17 by CC

Paved multiuse trails dry! Unpaved trails bottomless mud / ice-puddles / decomposing frost heaves.

Archangel Road Tuesday Apr 15 by Zack Steer

Touched up the skate and classic lanes to upper outhouse. Punchy on the bottom, icy on top. Ski-able, but not great conditions. At least it's still mostly white trail. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Far North Bicentennial Park Saturday Apr 12 by Ben Neff

Thick snow grabbed at our tires (Trek Top Fuel Mtn Bikes) as we headed south from Muldoon. We made it almost to Moose Ridge before turning back. Fat bikers, where are you? We needed someone to cut trail for us... hehe... Trail showed signs of being very wet underneath, but was stable Sat a.m.

Hillside Thursday Apr 10 by Scott

Heavy powder snow varying from 4-6” thick. Fishscale and skin skis kick well and don’t have terrible glide. Fat bikes on the service singletrack and multiuse look to be riding in muddy ruts.

Bird to Gird Trail Thursday Apr 3 by devo

Rode the Bird to Gird Trail for the first time this year (actually Indian to Gird). Trail was remarkably free of major debris- no avalanche remains to note. The pond that has been covering the trail on the flats ~ 3 mi. north of GW has receded so we didn’t even get wet. A few areas to note - the AK RR is doing construction work at the Bird Creek crossing and they have closed ~300 yards of trail forcing bikers to ride along the edge of the road - not fun or safe. Recommend parking at BC Campground to avoid riding this section. Also of note - at the beginning of the big downhill towards Girdwood a stream crosses the trail and has deposited a bunch of sediment and gravel- I walked my skinny tire bike ~100’ thru this to avoid a flat.

Resurrection Pass Monday Mar 31 by tony

Measuring snow on the Hope side of the Res pass trail. 87% Normal at Pass Creek. 116% at Res Pass. Trail is bikeable and largely snow free to Caribou Creek. So many down trees between Caribou Creek and Fox Creek. Good afternoon kick and glide on a tree free trail above east creek.

Bird to Gird Trail Sunday Mar 30 by Brandon

Bird to Gird is snow free and dry. If you park at the trailhead across from the brown bear you will have to cross the highway twice, as the trail is closed over bird creek. Park further south if you don’t want to cross the highway.

Eklutna Lake Saturday Mar 29 by Katie Hickey

Eklutna crust is in! Skied entire length of lake, starting around 9:45am and 28F. Crust was softening by noon but still totally skate-skiable, both sides of lake. Our biker - on regular but studded tires -appreciated the frozen four-wheel tracks (left by state park rangers on my previous outing). But the softer afternoon snow sent her to the muddy land trail instead.

Classic tour on beater fishscale skis, starting at the Raspberry parking lot - Margaux's north of the road was nicely packed, but still plenty forgiving for classic skiing without tracks. Trails south of the road (other than Lekisch) were a winter wonderland touring dream. Put on your gaiters and enjoy the untouched powder.
Side note that crossing Bolling Alley, it looked very ridable and maybe even snowmachine groomed??

Upper Huffman Sunday Mar 9 by MMalvick

The NSAA groomer was hard at work when I headed out with the sleddogs. We avoided it by going up the outbound snowmachine trail and dropping down via the single track trail to the Silver Fern Trail. As NSAA reports, the Gasline and Glen Alps grooms are great for skating and classic. The Silver Fern Trail has bare dirt and thin dirty ice sections for about the first half and after than it offers good skiing. Best way to avoid the thin/dirt spots is to ski across the Silver Fern bridge below the parking lot and boot up the shortcut trail to rejoin the Silver Fern trail below the gasline.

Looking for report! Had anyone cycled the length of the trail recently? Mostly bare? Ice? Snow? Would like to bike it.. but don't have fat tires

Eklutna Lake Saturday Mar 8 by Brian

As previously reported, a little under an inch of dry snow on ice. Kick and glide was fine – only once or twice did skis slide out getting to the back of the lake. Poles were another story – you could try sharpening your tips or hope things bake up in the coming days.

Lots of ice on trails around U lake area. Some nice edges of dry pavement on paved multiuse trail. Some bare patches here and there. Half the time you want spikes, half the time you want summer joggers.

BLM Campbell Tract Monday Mar 3 by Tundrapaddy

Walked a short survey of the small trails between Abbott Park ballfields and Service HS. Snow lagely gone, Ulu was exposed gravel. Thick ice deposits still mostly intact (for now), but it's definitely not winter conditions anymore. Would recommend NO STUDDED TIRES now, as it'll just tear up roots and soil.

Eklutna Lake Sunday Feb 23 by Heidi

Skate skiing on Eklutna Lake is fantastic! Some areas in the middle are packed velvety snow. Most of the ice is covered by an inch of huge frost crystals and crusty snow. It feels like extra crunchy crust skiing.

Ice skates would not do well. Any kind of ski or bike would be fine.

Nancy Lake State Recreation Area Sunday Feb 23 by Sara

We biked the Nancy Lake Canoe Trail this weekend. I would highly recommend this loop while the lakes are still frozen. We didn’t have any overflow. Portages are icy, packed fast snow and bare ground. Lakes are smooth and fast. The whole thing was a unique, fun adventure that won’t be possible every year. Get it while you can!

Eklutna Lake Saturday Feb 8 by Alaska_rory

Really great skate skiing to be found at Eklutna! Crusty and frosty snow half way up the lake from parking lot. Just before you pass Kokanee cabin the snow changes to huge abundant frost flowers, which provided surprisingly great ski surface! Edgable, smooth, and better glide than the slower crustier stuff on the first half. If you’re looking for some distance on your skate skis without doing multiple Kincaid laps Eklutna is where it’s at!

MSSC finally completed the first complete groom of Treestand this season. Will be a bit soft for a day to so, but air down and have at it.

Remaining Moose Range trails vary from A to B- depending on ruts and grooming. Linguini is pretty chewed up, but doable. Need more snow to fill ATV ruts on some trails.

Campbell Creek Trail Tuesday Jan 28 by Glenn

Conditions for biking on the Campbell Creek Trail way improved. Curious if anyone has current biking information re some of my other regular bike commuting routes - Coastal Trail, Chester Creek, Fish Creek, Jewel Lake Rd and Wisconsin St paths.

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail Sunday Jan 26 by B Haynes

The Coastal Trail, around Lyn Ary, the lagoon and Elderberry Park, is pretty awful for riding. Some patches have smooth ice, like a Zamboni just drove through. Other spots have crazy, sharp, ice spikes sticking up waiting to stab you. And a few places are as dry as a hot day in June. The lagoon ice is gone. A few walkers and runners were doing ok with their Icebugs or cleats. I managed decently well with my studded tires. My husband (who does not have studs) fell and is laying on an ice pack now. Oh, the irony! These trail conditions change hourly, but my suggestion is ride the neighborhood streets or go to the gym.

Grooming Reports

In pursuit of our mission to provide a state-wide platform for all trail conditions, and to support the grooming efforts of the clubs that make those trails possible, we are excited to now include automated grooming reports provided by the Municipality of Anchorage's (MOA) Nordic Grooming Map.

When MOA, NSAA, or Girdwood NSC update the grooming status on the MOA Map, it is automatically displayed here as well, thanks to our "Friendly Trail Bot". Each new grooming update is displayed as a text report, similar to our usual user reports, including the names of the trails groomed as well as any groomer comments. The groomed trails are also displayed on the map, color-coded based on how long ago they were groomed.

This is a new feature, and we'd love to get your feedback on how we can improve it. Please send me an email: cory@snowio.com And, of course, we still want to see all of your first-hand reports posted here as well!

Thank you to the Municipality of Anchorage, Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage, and Girdwood Nordic Ski Club for making this possible! Please support these clubs' grooming efforts!

If you'd like to get your local club's grooming updates on this site (automated or otherwise), please get in touch. We'd love to make it happen!
