Warmer temperatures and an inch of new snow on top of fresh groom made the Sven Johansson race today a memorable one. Great ski conditions throughout the park. The only loop you might want to avoid until it gets groomed again is Horseshoe. It got pretty soft and messy with all the skaters pushing through it.

I emailed the Outdoor Program at APU to get a definitive answer, and the reply was "It’s a multi use 2 way trail now." So, now we know.
As far as excluding grooming by NSAA because it's a multiuse, that theory would also exclude the Tour of Anchorage at Far North Bicentennial, Gasline at Hillside, and the Raspberry Multiuse at Kincaid. The APU trails are not unique in their use/grooming combo.

Sunshine and freshly groomed trails at Kincaid Park made for an almost perfect day of classic skiing. Temperatures were a little chilly but lots of people were out skiing the first half of Mize and Arlene's Way for the Ski for Women, many with costumes. Most of the other trails had few skiers. The best part of the day was the surprise discovery that the Lake and Horseshoe Loops had recent grooms and solid double tracks. They were magical!

Skied from the treatment plant toward Kincaid. Trail is in great shape for skijoring- flat and packed, but not icy. Tracks were there but looked marginal. Skijored Campbell Creek from Lake Otis to the hospital yesterday and it was in similarly great shape, with crisp deep tracks foe the classic folks.

Tour of Anchorage Trail Friday Feb 5 by Bart

Skate skied from Kincaid chalet to Westchester Lagoon. Trail has been groomed and classic track set but is a bit thin in places, but no pavement or significant grit is exposed and the snow is clean and debris-free (except for the usual dusty part around the top of the Woronzof hill, where the classic track bottoms are especially thin and look a bit dirty). Kincaid to Woronzof is nice but a little soft; from there to Westchester it hardens up and gets faster. Most of the trail has been boot- and bike- packed on top of the city grooming, but that just adds a little texture to the fun, Overall, very nice skiing!

The snow cat took a spin down the Tour Trail via the BLM Airstrip (expect the new track to be shallow in places) and put down a loop with track around the APU Stadium. Should be some fun skiing today!

Classic skiing on the multi-use at Kincaid was surprisingly good. Was looking for a good place to go with our dog, and had low expectations as I thought the tracks there were probably obliterated by now, since it has been over a week since it was groomed for classic. But the tracks are there! 2-3" of fresh snow on them, but they've been nicely tracked back in now. Lovely to ski in fresh snow!

Classic ski on Mize, Arlene's, and Sisson. Yes, a little chunky and icy in places, but the tracks are deep and the profiles crisp. Sisson in the sun can't be beat. Grooming Reports

In pursuit of our mission to provide a state-wide platform for all trail conditions, and to support the grooming efforts of the clubs that make those trails possible, we are excited to now include automated grooming reports provided by the Municipality of Anchorage's (MOA) Nordic Grooming Map.

When MOA, NSAA, or Girdwood NSC update the grooming status on the MOA Map, it is automatically displayed here as well, thanks to our "Friendly Trail Bot". Each new grooming update is displayed as a text report, similar to our usual user reports, including the names of the trails groomed as well as any groomer comments. The groomed trails are also displayed on the map, color-coded based on how long ago they were groomed.

This is a new feature, and we'd love to get your feedback on how we can improve it. Please send me an email: cory@snowio.com And, of course, we still want to see all of your first-hand reports posted here as well!

Thank you to the Municipality of Anchorage, Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage, and Girdwood Nordic Ski Club for making this possible! Please support these clubs' grooming efforts!

If you'd like to get your local club's grooming updates on this site (automated or otherwise), please get in touch. We'd love to make it happen!
