Kincaid: Very windy conditions! Today is the Super Tour Classic distance race. The racecourse is using the Stadium area, Elliot’s, Roller Coaster, Dark Alley, Gong Hill and the Lekisch 1.5! The Raspberry Roadside Multi-use was groomed with the PB100. We will be back out on the trails after this windstorm has subsided. Stay warm and safe today!

Hillside: Scratched firm snowy trails (Spencer, Double Bubble and Gasline). The fierce wind went silent as Sunday arrived. Have a great day!

Beach Lake Trails: High winds are causing concern about the sublimation of the snow. No new grooming but the crew plans to go out and look for downed trees. We’ll assess once the winds subside. Have a great Sunday!

Kincaid: The Solstice Tree Tour has been postponed due to forecasted high winds. The event is due to take place next Saturday, December 20 from 4-8pm. Hope to see you then! The Jodhpur, Margaux’s, first half of the Mize, Lekisch 1.5, Elliot’s, World Cup and Dark Alley were scuffed up. The Biathlon area, the Stadium and the Green loop were also groomed! Enjoy the trails!

Hillside: E Bike? E Motorcycle?  Spent a good deal of time repairing the damage. Fair results on the Lighted loops and Gasline.

Beach Lake Trails: Scratched it up, pretty thin, hard, and bumpy. Have a great Saturday!

Kincaid: Snowmachine groomed first half of Mize, Lekisch lighted, Margaux’s, Jodhpur, Elliot’s and World Cup. Trail conditions remain interesting with patches of ice. The Biathlon area and Dark Alley have also been freshly groomed with track set. Today the Supertour Freestyle Sprint race begins at 10:30 am. Be mindful of the racecourse using the Stadium, Gong Hill and Green loop. Don’t forget the Solstice Tree Tour is tomorrow from 4-8! Solstice Tree Tour – Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage Enjoy!

Hillside: TGIF! Snowmachine groomed/scuffed up Lighted trails, Gasline, and Trailside connector. The results are okay, and the skiing should be pleasant with the warmer temperatures. Have a day, folks!

Glen Alps: Conditions are definitely improving! DNR made it out yesterday and groomed from Glen Alps trailhead to the Ptarmigan Pass intersection, approximately 3.5 miles down Powerline Pass Trail. The trail almost has total coverage, with only one or two rocks poking through.  An attempt was made to groom down toward Upper Huffman, but there still isn’t quite enough coverage. Have a great weekend!

Kincaid: Snowmachine groomed Margaux’s, Jodhpur, the first half of Mize and first half of Lekisch Lighted plus World Cup and Four Corners Connector. The trail conditions remain variable with icy sections. The best conditions can be found in areas that were mostly protected from the wind. Took a spin on Mize’s Folly and Icebox but those are pretty icy and would not recommend skiing either. There is active snowmaking in the Biathlon, Stadium and Lower Roller Coaster. Do a snow dance and enjoy!

Hillside: Scuffed Spencer, Dbl Bbl, Gasline. Trail base cold-soaked. Air temperature well below “0”. Mildly impressed with the result. Skiable.

Beach Lake Trails: Put some more snow in the outbound tunnel. Hit the high traffic areas. Right hand hot grip stopped working and I missed it a lot.  It’s cold.

Bartlett HS: Four passes on everything. Trails are still looking good…considering.

Eagle River HS/Yosemite Dr: Made 3-4 passes, nothing new to report. Should ski well.

Kincaid: It’s cold out today. Bundle up! Snowmachine groomed the Jodhpur, Margaux’s and first half of the Mize. Trail conditions are variable with patches of ice. The Stadium, Biathlon area and Green loop were cat groomed with fresh track set. Be cautious of active snowmaking and enjoy!

Hillside: The sub-zero cold temperatures refined the snow into a firm consistent surface. Snowmachine groomed/scuffed Lighted trails, Service High, and Gasline. Results are okay and should ski fine. Dress warm and enjoy the clarity that only this deep cold provides.

Beach Lake Trails: Put some snow in the inbound tunnel. Try not to kick too hard in there as it’s not going to have a lot of set. Tried to smooth the outer loops up a little bit. This frost heaving is getting to be a little hard on the eyes. Have a great day a stay warm out there!

Kincaid: Snowmachine groomed Jodhpur, Margaux’s, Elliot’s and first half of the Mize. Cat groomed the stadium, Biathlon and Green loop. The recent wind has left numerous patches of ice and tree debris on the trails! There is active snowmaking in the Stadium and on Dark Alley. Please, be cautious as you enjoy the trails!

Hillside: Cold-soaked and hard base. Local weather observation showed clear skies, unlimited visibility, and temperature well below zero (0) F. Scuffed Lighted trails and Gasline.  Fair (-) result. Bundle up and have fun!

Beach Lake Trails: Smoothed it up a bit. Made four passes on Sprint, Bridge, Main St, Swamp, North Pasture, Meander & most everything on the highschool side. Watch for windblown tree debris and uneven base…other than that skiing should be pretty good, considering. Have a great day!

Kincaid: Scuffed up the first half of the Mize, Margaux’s and the Jodhpur. The windy conditions have caused areas of windswept ice and tree debris on the tails. Ski with caution and feel free to help clear the debris off the trails. The Super Tour freestyle race begins today at 11:30 am. Please, be mindful of the racecourse. Have a great day!

Hillside: Cleaned up the Lighted Loops, Connectors and Gasline with a snowmachine. Enjoy your Sunday and stay warm!

Beach Lake Trails:  Smoothed it out. However, this is the worst frost heaving I think I’ve seen since I started here in ’07. Luge and Devil’s Corner are heaved out of shape really badly making them pretty darn sporty. Decent coverage. Have fun and be careful out there!

Coyote Trails at MLMS: Still a bit of ice heaves with plenty of little humps here and there. Rock skis are suggested. Three passes on all. Enjoy!

Walked the STA trails around the Jodhpur Loop including Kitchen Sink, Tower Power, short section of Bolling Alley and Sand Box. Winds were averaging about 15 mph but gusting up to 35 mph so lots of tree limbs and other debris coming down. Trails looked good for fat tire biking with studded tires. Some icy spots under a skiff of new snow and windblown debris. I saw the large spruce down across the Jodhpur Loop trail. It's at the base of the uphill before Burky's Bend.

Kincaid Park Saturday Dec 6 by Kirk Rose

There’s a big downed tree crossing Jodhpur loop at the bottom of a mid-loop hill. Requires removing skis to hop it. Any help flagging for trail maintenance is appreciated.

Kincaid: Refreshed the Lighted trails, Elliot’s and the Multi-use. Today is the Super Tour Classic Sprint race set to start at 10:30 am. Please be mindful of the racecourse using the Stadium and Snowmaking Loops. Enjoy the trails!

Hillside: Who let the [cat] out?! Snowcat groomed the Lighted Loops and the course for the first High School race of the season…the Service Snowball Sprint (Jr. Nordic and Randy’s loops). The race kicks off at 11 am. Gasline has fresh track, and Spencer Loop was smoothed out with the snowmachine! Should be an amazing day to ski!

Beach Lake Trails: Preliminary work on the outer loops. Just made a couple passes. Going to try to get some set going so that we can get aggressive with some down pressure tomorrow. Trying to be nice to this little bit that we have because it seems like this is what we are going to be working with for the foreseeable. I certainly don’t recommend the big hills just yet. Have a great day!

Kincaid: Packed down the new snow on the Lighted trails, Elliot’s Climb and around World Cup! The skiing should be fun. Enjoy!

Hillside: The Supermoon provides! Along with cooling temperatures we received a couple inches of snow! Winged down Lighted trails, Dbl. Bbl, South Bivouac, Sahalee connector, and Trailside Elementary connector. Should be a much-deserved fun day of skiing. Enjoy and happy Friday y’all!

Beach Lake Trails: We had several days of warm weather and a ton of rain fall on a very thin snow base that sits on top of a badly frost-heaved trail. The snow we got has fairly modest density and should make about a quarter inch base. We’re keeping our expectations low and will hopefully be pleasantly surprised! I am super grateful though. I would imagine it’s going to be easy to shear this off of the ice so please ski carefully and avoid the big hills until we have a chance to work on them a little bit. Have fun out there!

Bartlett HS: A few inches of very light new snow. There is still an ice layer underneath but hopefully some bonding will take place. Made four passes with the snowmachine and compaction wing. Enjoy!

Eagle River HS/Yosemite Dr: Made three passes over the light and fluffy snow. Of course the base is icy, but was able to cut it a bit. Probably decent skiing but watch for slippery spots. Have a great weekend!

12/4 around 4:30 pm. Lost a Thule belt pole at kincaid stadium parking lot, right by the trash bins. Silver. Hoping someone here found it. Thanks.

Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage Thursday Dec 4 by Friendly Report Bot [?]

Kincaid: Expect variable conditions. Snowmachine groomed the Lighted trails and a few dark trails. However, sadly with the current rainy precipitation and temperatures it’s likely that the trails have re-iced over. The Green loop and Biathlon area were groomed with fresh track set and should ski nicely! Be safe out there!

Hillside: Happy Thursday! Used the snowmachine to groom Lighted trails, Stadium, and Trailside Elementary. Temperature dropped for a few hours with bouts of freezing rain. For now, the surface appears skiable. However, if you make it out use extreme caution as weather continues to glaze trails and watch out for icy spots.

Beach Lake Trails: Smoothed out the skate marks.  Made several passes on the Christy.  It’s going to need some more work. I see there are a couple of trees on Mama’s that need a little chainsaw love.  We are not getting much set out of this ground ice. I’m hoping the cooler temperatures will help with that and praying that I’ll get to stir some fresh snow in with this.  Stay away from the big hills.

Bartlett HS: The trail base is still workable with good coverage despite the warm-up. Made three passes on the entire system, except a few cut-offs. Watch for icy patches and ski with caution. Have a good one!

Eagle River HS/Yosemite Dr: Made three passes on both sides to rough up the ice a bit. Ski with caution and think SNOW!

Jodphur, Margaux's, and the first half of the Mize were pretty good. Downhills on second half of Mize were terrifying. I stayed clear of Lekisch. SML was wonderful as expected. NSAA's dire grooming summary put me in timid mode.

When I was finishing, the Dimond Lynx filled the parking lot headed for the snow.

Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage Wednesday Dec 3 by Friendly Report Bot [?]

Kincaid: During the short window of freezing temperatures, we attempted to deglaze the icy surface on the Lighted trails. The results are variable and ugly. All other trails are extremely icy and should be avoided. If you ski today, please be extremely cautious.

Hillside: Dust on crust! The freezing rain that we had for a few hours yesterday morning glazed the trails over pretty good. Made a brawny attempt to create a skiable surface with marginal results. If you make it out today, please use caution and be aware of the conditions. Think snow and be well.

Beach Lake Trails: Broke the glaze. Fair amount of dirt spots, and rocks. There will be icy spots, and it’s basically just ground ice so ski with care.

Kincaid: Freezing rain is actively causing icy conditions! The Lighted trails and several dark trails were groomed earlier this morning. Use extra caution today!

Hillside: We have crusty ice conditions. Minded the dark trails today to include Spencer, Dbl. Bbl.  and Gasline. Use caution as it has been spitting sleet/snow all morning making conditions quite hard. Be well and have a nice Tuesday.

Beach Lake Trails: Pulled out my last little trick to try to break this glaze. Took the control linkage arms off the cutter and replaced with chains so the cutter bar would just float behind me and made multiple passes. Was able to break up the glaze somewhat but I did start turning up a lot of rocks and dirt. I think the price was worth it, though there will be icy places as I could not break the glaze consistently.  Most of the park is not groomed. The big hills are not going to be safe for anybody without superior skill and people with those kinds of superior skills are generally smart enough not to want to have to demonstrate them in risky situations.  The weather folks seem to think we’re going to turn the corner by Thursday; I pray they’re correct.  Feel free to flick rocks, or any kind of debris out of the trail that you might find. Ski with caution and have a great day!

Kincaid was great this morning around 5:40AM! Very fast but not crusty, the fresh groom on wet snow held together and wasn't too soft, unlike drier fresh grooms. My tracks were maybe 1 cm deep. I don't expect conditions to improve today as it's still raining. I crept Raspberry hill at 5mph, black ice all the way from Sand Lake to the park. Be careful out there

Snowmaking loop only trail worth skiing. The rest is crust, not even a groomed loop through the stadium

Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage Monday Dec 1 by Friendly Report Bot [?]

Kincaid: Snowmaking is on hold until we get colder temperatures. Crusty ice conditions. Snowmachine groomed Lighted Loops. Use caution.

Hillside: Well, we’ve got a case of the Mondays here at Hillside. While grooming last night we had a snowmachine go down and spent the morning extracting said machine off of the trail. Will continue to work on that and will try again tomorrow. Trailside Elementary has been groomed out in preparation for Jr. Nordic. Have a good day all.

Beach Lake Trails: 28° when I started 30° and raining when I finished. Not sure what we’re going to get. There’s overflow on the last big drop on the Junkyard at the bottom of that corner so watch out there. The down hills are so lumpy and bumpy and out of shape they are truly sporty, can’t really recommend, The Luge and Devil’s Corner are particularly bad.  Ski and walk gently around the Chalet loop. There’s only an inch of base, knock it loose and you bring up that sharp, crushed rock, which really gouges skis.

Eagle River High School: Did two passes on the high school side but had to abort due to rain. There’s a hard ice layer on top & will likely be slippery.

Bartlett High School: Four passes on everything, ground is well packed. IF it freezes, it should be fast skiing. Be careful out there!

Beach Lake Trails: 26°. The rain, instead of forming a crust, made dry granules on top that actually combed out pretty nicely. Still can’t put a cutter bar to it. Made four passes with snowmobiles on the high traffic areas, both sides.  We will see what the morning brings. Enjoy!

Hillside: Lighted trails, Service stadium, Gasline refreshed. Widened areas where required. Decent result. Skiable. Enjoy the holiday!

Beach Lake Trails: A lot of frost heaving going on giving us no end of speed bumps. Once again, we can’t put a cutter to it. The best we can do is down pressure on the wing because of the very thin base. The price for this is leaving snowmobile ski marks everywhere, pretty pronounced on the tight corners. It’s all a little bit hard on groomer eyes, but the snow is coming. Coverage is still fairly reasonable. Have a wonderful day! Gobble Gobble!

Classic skied Sisson loop. No track but pretty good conditions. Would have been a nice skate, minus a few lumpy spots. However, there is a down tree on the fast left hand curve just as you're dropping down to the coastal plane. It's avoidable if you take it on the very inside of the curve, but it does block about 90% of the trail.

Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage Wednesday Nov 26 by Friendly Report Bot [?]

Kincaid: Snowmachine groomed and set classic track on Margaux’s and Jodhpur! Green loop was refreshed with track set. We are making snow in the stadium and biathlon areas. Be careful and enjoy!

Hillside: Good morning. Refreshed with snowmachine the Lighted trails, Abbot Multi-use and took a trip down the TOA to include Coyote, Birch Knob, and the Airstrip. Enjoy!

Beach Lake Trails: It’s a little rough and rolling out there, but the coverage is still OK. Not enough for a cutter, so the best we could do is just use the small paddles on the snowmobile tracks to soften it up a little bit and put it back down with the wing. If you have trouble getting down the hills without plowing or feel the need to do a hockey stop perhaps you could stay on the flat trails until we have a little more than an inch and 3/4 of base.  Have a great day!

Chugiak HS: Smoothed the Stadium out and worked the Christy. Rocks, rocks, rocks and a few more rocks on the Christy. Both tunnels now have a ribbon of snow. Ski with caution and have a great day!

Glen Alps: Our friends at DNR groomed from the Glen Alps Trailhead up the valley on Poweline Pass Trail for 4.5 miles before turning around. Base is thin and some rocks do poke through, so rock skis are recommended. Trail width varies from 6 ft. or more for most of the trail to 2-3 ft. farther back in the valley. DNR has plans for more grooming once we get more snow. Have fun out there!

Kincaid: The Lighted trails were snowmachine groomed. Snowmaking is in progress! Please ski with extra caution and avoid the SML. Have fun out there!

Hillside: Scratched up Dbl Bbl and Spencer today. Fair result and skiable. Enjoy!

Bartlett HS: Bill snowmachine groomed the entire system. There was a vehicle incursion that effected 1/3 of the trails. It only spun out on one uphill and the ruts weren’t too deep due to the low level of snow. Also, ASD plowed across the entrance to the trail down to grass, so watch for that. It is what it is and aside from all the dog walkers and 4-wheeled traffic the coverage is still decent with no rocks showing. Skiing should be OK, considering. Have a great day!

Hillside: Drew snowmachine groomed the Lighted Loops and took a spin down the TOA. He said the results were “Okay” as it’s still early season and to watch for rocks in spots. Otherwise, pretty decent skiing for what we’ve got. The highlight of his shift was seeing the gorgeous display of Northern Lights! Have a wonderful day!

Hillside: Drew and Scott track packed the Multiuse from FNBP Ball Fields to Bivouac. Double Bubble, Chicken Run and Spencer have been track packed as well.

Beach Lake Trails: Packed the Chalet Loop with a four-wheeler, pulling a boggan to keep the crushed rock from turning up. On the rest of the trails I used a snowmobile floating a wing, three passes, it’s pretty thin. I believe if I was gonna try it, I’d borrow someone else’s rock skis.

Three Cheers for the groomers. Kincaid is almost completely packed. B-pair Classic skis worked well again with purple kick. Ice Box – Hairpin was my favorite of newly packed trails. I wasn’t brave enough for dark Lekisch. The Sisson was extra slow as it seems less flat than other trails. The lit trails sped up on this second day with most of the human generated classic trails disappearing into the more polished surface. It’s time to scrape off the skate skis. Look at that snowless forecast and get it now! Remember tomorrow’s NSAA meeting at Kincaid. – Ski ya there

Grooming Reports

In pursuit of our mission to provide a state-wide platform for all trail conditions, and to support the grooming efforts of the clubs that make those trails possible, we are excited to now include automated grooming reports provided by the Municipality of Anchorage's (MOA) Nordic Grooming Map.

When MOA, NSAA, or Girdwood NSC update the grooming status on the MOA Map, it is automatically displayed here as well, thanks to our "Friendly Trail Bot". Each new grooming update is displayed as a text report, similar to our usual user reports, including the names of the trails groomed as well as any groomer comments. The groomed trails are also displayed on the map, color-coded based on how long ago they were groomed.

This is a new feature, and we'd love to get your feedback on how we can improve it. Please send me an email: cory@snowio.com And, of course, we still want to see all of your first-hand reports posted here as well!

Thank you to the Municipality of Anchorage, Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage, and Girdwood Nordic Ski Club for making this possible! Please support these clubs' grooming efforts!

If you'd like to get your local club's grooming updates on this site (automated or otherwise), please get in touch. We'd love to make it happen!
